Hello, this is Dr. Coles, Superintendent of Schools for Wauconda School District 118. A short time ago, the Health Department confirmed that one of our students who attends Cotton Creek School has been diagnosed with H1N1 Influenza, or what is commonly referred to as the Swine Flu. The Centers for Disease Control currently do not advise school closure for a confirmed case of H1N1 Influenza. However, certain precautions should be taken to help stop the spread of this illness. Students who are sick should stay home. Anyone with a temperature higher than 100 degrees, in combination with a cough or sore throat, should see a doctor and will be required to remain at home for at least seven days. Students exhibiting these symptoms will only be allowed to return to school earlier than the seven days if their doctor has confirmed a diagnosis of strep throat. Furthermore, as a precaution, those who are immuno compromised, or who are pregnant, should contact their doctor. Additional information about preventing influenza-like illnesses may be found on the district’s website. Questions about H1N1 Influenza may be directed to either the Lake or McHenry County Health Departments or our school nurses. Thank you.
