Wauconda High School
Varsity Volleyball
Seniors
The 2008 Wauconda High School varsity volleyball program enjoyed their most successful season in school history. They won 28 games and lost 7 and set an Illinois High School Association record for number of wins in a row with 21.
Lead by seven seniors, the Lady Bulldogs won the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division title. They went undefeated 6-0 in division play. At the Libertyville/Vernon Hills Crosstown Classic tournament, they finished fourth out of sixteen teams.
Kristy Waltenburg lead the way with her setting by breaking the school record for single season assists. She fed the ball to six-footers Becky Breakfield and Lauren Mead who primarily played the left side. Mead broke the single season kill record. Assisting Waltenburg with setting and playing outstanding defense were Lisa Aguilar and Corinne Feight. Aguilar played the libero position most of the season and Feight had many runs of point scoring with her serve.
Another tough server was Jessica Sauer. She was often used in tight situations and was able to contribute with her “team first” attitude. Megan Holub was known for her unselfish play and was one of five players on this year’s team who was over 5’10” tall.
Said Head Coach Jonathan Grandt of his seniors: “This was a really exciting season to be a part of. The seniors were determined and persistent. It was a lot of fun to watch these girls play.”
He continued: “Having coached this group of seniors from their middle school years up through the high school years made me proud to see what they have become, as volleyball players and as young adults. I hope I was able to give them some volleyball memories and a sense of personal responsibility. This group will not be forgotten anytime soon and will be talked about for many years to come.”
